Five-year ban spells the end for Akhtar

THE tempestuous international career of Shoaib Akhtar is over. The 32-year-old paceman was last night banned for five-years by the Pakistan Cricket Board - essentially a death sentence to his Test and one-day career.
Akhtar received the ban for publicly criticising the PCB over contracts while serving a two-year probationary period for hitting teammate Mohammad Asif with a bat before last year's Twenty20 World Cup.
Akhtar is free to play in the Indian Premier League and will likely pursue a Bollywood acting career.
Board chairman Dr Nasim Ashraf said the suspension had been imposed on the recommendation of the PCB disciplinary committee, and the paceman had the right to lodge an appeal. "The board has lost confidence in Shoaib Akhtar and therefore felt that his presence in the field was damaging to the Pakistan team, for Pakistan players and for the image of Pakistan cricket," Ashraf said.
